Hi everyone.

Welcome back to “A Weekly Review to Sculpt A New You”.

I plan to talk today about the awake breast augmentation procedure. Some of you may have already heard about it, but for those of you who have not, I will give you a run down.

Here at North Texas Cosmetic Surgery, we are known for performing breast augmentations awake and without general anesthesia. This may sound scary to some of you, but let me assure you that over 99% of our patients undergoing this innovative and proven procedure tell us afterward that the procedure was much better than they had anticipated. While we offer twilight anesthesia or ProNox (i.e. laughing gas) at an additional cost for those of you not desiring the awake procedure, I have performed over 500 of these procedures with an exceptional satisfaction rate. In fact, 99% of my patients declare that the procedure exceeded their expectations and they would recommend it to their friends and family. I have received so many referrals from my existing patients undergoing this procedure.

What does awake breast augmentation mean? It means placing breast implants without the use of general anesthesia. The entire procedure is performed under local tumescent anesthesia and some oral pain and anti-anxiety medications. This makes the procedure a safer alternative and allows those patients desiring saline breast implants to have more control over their final breast size.

First of all what is tumescent anesthesia? Tumescent anesthesia is a combination of salt water, lidocaine and adrenaline mixed together that numbs the breast, lessens the bleeding as well as the infection rate during the procedure. The tumescent anesthesia is infused into the area of the breast where the implant is being placed and allows me to create the breast pocket for the implant and place the implant with a minimal amount of pain or discomfort. 99 % of my patients tell me that the entire procedure was much better than anticipated and are very happy with the entire process.

What to expect on the day of the surgery?

You will come into the office and are escorted to the operating room. There you will be given a gown. A brief history and evaluation by the nurse will be taken. If appropriate, you will be asked to give a urine to have a urine pregnancy test performed. Next, I will take pre-operative pictures of your breasts and then I will mark your breasts with a blue or a black marker. Further pictures as well as measurements of your breasts will be taken. Your lungs and your heart will be auscultated and you will be allowed to empty your bladder again if needed.

Next, you will be placed on the operating room table and the tumescent (local) anesthesia will be injected. The breast pocket will be formed and then the breast implants will be inserted. Saline implants will be inserted dry and then filled to the size of the implant. Silicone implants come pre-filled and will be inserted through a funnel like object for the most sterile technique and the least amount of discomfort to you. If you have saline implants we will then cover the incisions, sit you upright, and allow you and one other person to view your breasts and decide if you desire additional saline placed into each implant to enlarge the implants more. Since silicone implants come prefilled, this option is not available for them and we will close the incisions as soon as the silicone implants are inserted. We will close the incisions after saline implants as soon as we decide your desired size.

Most patients feel only the pressure of the implants without significant pain initially before going home. You are usually discharged home within 20 minutes after the procedure is completed. We wrap your breasts in a tight wrap for the 1st 2 days after surgery to help lessen the chance of complications after surgery.

We recommend you eat a hearty meal once you get home so that you may take your pain medications at that time to stay ahead of the pain before the tumescent numbing medicine wears off. We will ask you to see us back in 1-4 days, depending on your surgery date and the location of your home. Most importantly, you are given my personal cell phone number to call or text me for any concerns, issues or questions that may arise after your surgery.

So call us at 972-743-6827 to schedule your free consultation. You can also visit our website at www.northtexascosmeticsurgery.com to learn more about the procedure and view our before and after pictures.

I hope you enjoyed this part of our video series, and I hope to see you soon for your free initial breast consultation or any other cosmetic concerns. Until next time, be safe and look forward to talking to you again.
