A lipoabdominoplasty is a less-invasive way to perform tummy tucks with the same, if not better, results. Lipoabdominoplasties combine liposuction of the abdomen with excision of loose excess skin in the abdomen and tightening of the abdominal wall. All of this is performed without the need for traditional general anesthesia.

How can I do all of this without the use of traditional general anesthesia? The key is starting by injecting tumescent anesthesia into the fatty layer of the abdominal wall. Tumescent anesthesia is a combination of salt water, lidocaine and adrenaline.

• Lidocaine numbs the abdominal wall and provides additional protection, lessening the risks for infection.
• Adrenaline shrinks the size of the blood vessels during the procedure and lessens the risks for bleeding.
• Salt water helps the liposuction go more smoothly.

The liposuction can be performed while you are awake. The skin removal and tightening of the abdominal wall is performed under the local tumescent anesthesia, as well as twilight anesthesia. This means there is no need for general anesthesia gasses, intubation with a tube down your throat, or a breathing machine.
