Done Breastfeeding? Let’s Talk About Your Breast Surgery Options
If pregnancy and breastfeeding have taken a toll on the appearance of your breasts, you might be considering cosmetic surgery. We review your options for breast rejuvenation here.

Throughout pregnancy, the postpartum period, and breastfeeding, your breasts have grown, shrunk, and leaked on a seemingly never-ending loop. Once you’ve weaned your nursing baby, you may find that your breasts are unrecognizable.

Your breasts might be smaller, larger, saggier, or softer than they were pre-pregnancy and maybe even asymmetrical. If you want to achieve a perkier, fuller, or more symmetrical look to your breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding, our team led by board-certified Alan Greenberg, MD, at North Texas Cosmetic Surgery in Frisco, Texas, offers a variety of breast surgery options that can help give you the look you want.

This month’s blog focuses on how pregnancy and breastfeeding change your breasts and how each breast surgery works to address your specific concerns.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and your breasts

While breastfeeding certainly plays a role in breast changes, pregnancy is also to blame. Soon after conception, your body ramps up estrogen and progesterone production, creating more fatty tissue and boosting blood flow in your breasts. As your breasts continue to grow during pregnancy, the ligaments stretch, and you may start to notice stretch marks and visible veins.

After you’ve given birth, your body produces prolactin so you can nurse your baby. This means your breasts are once again growing and stretching as you start producing milk, and this can intensify stretch marks and vein visibility. Your nipples also get larger and darker to make breastfeeding easier for your infant.

All this growing and stretching can make it hard for the skin around your breasts to snap back into place, causing breasts to appear saggier or stretched out.

How breast surgery can help

At North Texas Cosmetic Surgery, we offer two popular surgical solutions that can rejuvenate your breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Let’s look at each one in detail.

Breast augmentation

If you feel your breasts are flat, asymmetrical, or appear empty, a breast augmentation can help. During this procedure, Dr. Greenberg adds volume and fullness to your breasts using implants or fat harvested from another portion of your body.

He uses an “awake” surgical method, meaning you’ll be awake but completely numb to pain. This provides a way for you to provide real-time input on the size and shape of your breasts. It also reduces recovery time, adverse side effects, and cost.

Breast lift

If you feel your breasts are drooping or just not as perky and youthful-looking as you’d like, a breast lift is a great option. Dr. Greenberg rearranges and contours your breast tissue, giving your breasts a firmer and rounder appearance. In addition, he removes excess breast tissue and repositions your nipples and areolas.

Dr. Greenberg also does this procedure without full-on general anesthesia and sedation, which offers all the same benefits described above. If you’d like, you can combine your breast lift with breast augmentation.
