Although the light and warmth of the sun are quite comforting for most people, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are, unfortunately, incredibly damaging to human skin. UV rays from the sun not only dry out your skin and deprive it of its naturally lubricating oils, but they also change your skin’s structure deep below the surface and damage your collagen production.
So, if you find yourself with signs of sun-damaged skin (referred to as photoaging) such as premature fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, or spider veins, you may be wondering what you can do to rejuvenate your skin.
While some of that deep-rooted skin structure damage can’t be reversed, there are treatments available to help smooth out and freshen your skin’s appearance, one of which is radiofrequency (RF) microneedling.
At North Texas Cosmetic Surgery in Frisco, Texas, board-certified cosmetic surgeon Alan Greenberg, MD, leads our aesthetics team in offering the brand of RF microneedling known as Morpheus8®. We review what you need to know about this state-of-the-art treatment here in this month’s blog.
RF microneedling combines the techniques of two cosmetic treatments: RF skin tightening and microneedling. When you combine heat from radiofrequency energy and pricking motions from a microneedling device, collagen production jumps into high gear.
The Morpheus8 device we prefer at North Texas Cosmetic Surgery uses tiny needles infused with radiofrequency heat to penetrate deep into your skin tissues, effectively encouraging a high amount of new collagen.
When your skin is minorly but purposefully injured with the microneedling device, your body starts the healing process. As your skin heals, thicker, firmer, and softer skin rich in collagen takes the place of the old skin, giving you an overall much fresher appearance.
Before undergoing RF microneedling, Dr. Greenberg and our team sit down with you first to discuss your aesthetic goals and ensure this treatment is right for you. You might not qualify for RF microneedling if you have a skin infection, are on acne medication, or typically have poor wound healing.
We can also talk through other treatments that can help reduce wrinkles and sun spots, such as laser treatments or cosmetic injections.
On the day of your RF microneedling session, we start by numbing the treatment area with a topical anesthetic. If you’re getting multiple areas done in one visit, we may use mild sedation to keep you comfortable. Dr. Greenberg then uses the Morpheus8 device to treat areas of sun-damaged skin precisely.
You should expect to see results in about 3-4 weeks. However, to ensure that your results last, protect your skin by limiting extended sun exposure, wearing sunscreen, and moisturizing daily.
